5.9: "The Terrible Trio"
ORIGINAL U.S. AIRDATE: January 2, 2008 EPISODE: 5.9 SYNOPSIS: "Three losers transform themselves into criminal Man-Animals!" REVIEWER: Bill Ramey POSTED: Thursday, January 7, 2008
You know, I really, really try to be fair to THE BATMAN. The show is well done all around -- I’ve admitted as much several times in the past. I know that it’s aimed at kids, not adults, and I’m fine with that as well.
But sometimes, an episode makes me roll my eyes a tad too much. Case in point, the latest installment of THE BATMAN titled “The Terrible Trio.” The Terrible Trio is a group of criminals that The Batman (and Robin) have battled several times over the years, beginning in DETECTIVE COMICS #253 back in 1958. There have been several incarnations of TTT over the years, but they have always been bad guys in fox, vulture, and shark costumes. Not anymore. In THE BATMAN, TTT are actual half man/half animal beings. No, I am not kidding. Now, I’ll admit that the way this particular interpretation of TTT is a bit clever. Basically, the guys are like Man-Bat, having used Dr. Kirk Langstrom’s formula to turn themselves into Man-Shark, Man-Fox, and Man-Vulture. I said it was clever, but that doesn’t necessarily make it good. As far as the plot goes, TTT don’t really seem to be criminals doing what they do for monetary gain. No, these guys are a bunch of college-age losers simply carrying out their schemes for kicks and revenge against those who disrespected them in the past. For example, one of TTT’s fave ruses is to turn others into Man-Whatevers against their will. Isn’t that exciting! Not. Look, I don't mind the fact that I'm not within this show's target audience, OK? But, I do mind it when an episode totally excludes the older Bat-Fans -- which this latest episode does. Anyone under the age of 13 is probably going to be put off by this one due to the silliness of it. “The Terrible Trio” was the weakest episode so far of this season of THE BATMAN. The only reason I made it through the entire thing was so that I could write this review for your reading pleasure. Otherwise, I would have turned it off as soon as TTT turned one of their classmates into King Kong.
