REVIEWER: Bill Ramey POSTED: Sunday, October 7, 2007
The “Season of Team-Ups” continues on THE BATMAN as Green Arrow shows up in Gotham and partners-up with The Dark Knight.
What’s good about this episode -- at least for me -- was that you got away from the fantastical by having a non-superpowered character “guest star” on this week’s episode. Hell, Green Arrow and Batman have a lot in common, as both are rich dudes who fight crime as a costumed vigilante. I guess “VERTIGO” -- the title of this episode by the way -- is THE BATMAN‘s version of “THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD.” Anyway… While we’re devoid of superpowers and metahumans this time around, that doesn’t mean we’re not served up a bit of cheese. Case in point, Count Vertigo -- our villain of the week. “Count Vertigo?” *rolls eyes* If you know what vertigo is, you can probably figure out what this dude can do. Plus, they tie him to Green Arrow and his origin -- which we get in a quick flashback. It also doesn’t take “The World’s Greatest Detective” to figure out the basic storyline here either. Bad Guy in Gotham doing bad things. Two heroes partner-up and take him on. It looks as if the Bad Guy is going to win, until the heroes working together to defeat him. And of course, this is THE BATMAN, so we’re treated to a few juvenile-esque one liners from Robin, The Boy Wonder. While I enjoyed this episode overall, it still wasn’t without a few problems. OK, so this Vertigo is using a Wayne Enterprises sub-company to carry out his dastardly plan. How in the hell is this going on without Bruce Wayne or even Lucius Fox knowing about it? And as far as his plan is concerned, that was never really clear to me either. I think he was using a big gyroscope-thingie to make people dizzy so he can steal money. Actually, the whole deal with this particular villain was to bring Green Arrow into the story. It seems as if he and Oliver Queen have a “past” -- which was never really explained either, other than that he was indirectly responsible for the origin of The Green Arrow. And why in the hell do we have to have the big “true identify reveal” every time these superheroes get together? Sheesh. Despite its shortcomings, I thought “VERTIGO” was a pretty cool and enjoyable little episode. I kinda like Green Arrow as a character, so perhaps that had an influence on me.
