What do we know so far about the Batman who will appear in the sequel to MAN OF STEEL? (CLICK HERE for the BOF podcast which discusses everything you'll read below.) Well, the character…

* Will be portrayed by actor/writer/director Ben Affleck.

* Will be “more mature” than previous incarnations of Batman on film – an older, weary, and grizzled crime-fighting veteran.

* Will be semi-retired with Bruce holed-up in The Batcave fighting crime in Gotham with Batbots and Batdrones.

* Is estranged from his former crime-fighting partner Dick Grayson – AKA “Robin #1.”

* Regularly interacts with various members of the Batman Family such as Nightwing, Batgirl, Ace the Bathound, and Bat-Mite. AND…

* Blasts off into space via his Batrocket to fight aliens as well as other extraterrestrial and magical beings.

(OK, you all know I'm totally kidding with those last two points, right?)

It’s clear to me that there are two reasons why the character of Batman is being injected into the MAN OF STEEL sequel. Here's the deal...

Having Batman in the MOS follow-up will guarantee a much bigger box office than a straight-up Superman movie. Hey, I'd much rather a proper Superman only sequel to MOS, but I get that Warner Bros. knows where their bread is buttered when it comes to their DC Comics properties. They're shaking their money maker! Secondly, Warner Bros. is wanting to get the solo Batman film series going – sooner rather than later – now that Chris Nolan’s “Dark Knight Trilogy” is done.

Hey, Warner Bros. is killing two bats with one stone here – you know what I mean?

So, to heck with BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN or whatever it's ultimately called. Let's get to the question that all Batman fans are most concerned about: what kind of solo Bat-movies are we going to get after we’re introduced to the new incarnation of Batman on film?

Remember, this new cinematic Caped Crusader is going to be older than we’ve ever seen in a previous Batman movie. Why did Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne have a falling out? Is Jim Gordon still Gotham’s police commissioner? Was there another Robin after Grayson and if so, what happened to him? What made Batman replace himself as Gotham’s protector with drones and robots? Is Alfred still alive? What's the status of Batman's rogues gallery - especially Crazy Quilt?

I’m not sure those questions and others will be answered in BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN. I figure we'll get our Bat-answers in Batman on film by Warner Bros. 3.0. However, since we’re probably three or four years away from that first non-Nolan Bat-flick, I’ll try to answer those questions - and YOURS - in part 2 of this op-ed. So, send your questions to BOF via JETT@BATMAN-ON-FILM.COM and stay tuned! - Bill "Jett" Ramey
