A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: Last Saturday at Wondercon (2/23/08), I had the chance to visit with the director from GET SMART -- Peter Segal -- as well as its two stars -- Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway.
I know what you are thinking. I was thinking the same thing about GET SMART myself, trust me.
You've got Steve Carell starring, Peter Segal directing, and it’s GET SMART. It’s going to a parody, a spoof, right?
“I wouldn’t have done it [direct GET SMART] if that’s what it was, director Peter Segal told me. In fact, I told Steve Carell that it looks as if it has almost as much legitimate action as it does slapstick humor. “Yeah, I agree, he told me, “it’s sort of like THE BOURNE IDENTITY with lots of comedy.”
I know what else you're thinking, because I was thinking the same thing too.
Many of these sort of movies -- ones based on classic TV shows -- end up, well, sucking. Just because the original was really good, doesn’t mean that a movie based on it is going to be worth a damn.
Despite the track record of these sort of films, my skepticism was pretty much eradicated after attending the GET SMART panel at Wondercon and meeting with the director and cast afterwards.

All three -- Segal, Carell, and Ms. Hathaway -- seemed to genuinely believe that they’ve put together something special. Something that is at once unique and fresh, but still respects and pays tribute to the source material.
Often times, we lament the fact that they "missed it by that much” when these TV show-based movies end up failing.
Despite the fact of such a spotty track record for these type of films, I see no, ahem, "KAOS," on the horizon for this summer's GET SMART.
GET SMART opens June 20, 2008.
