Aussie Gov says, "Uh, no" to WB

Monday, January 21, 2008

7:10 AM TEXAS TIME: In a VARIETY article, the Australian government disputes Warner Bros. claim that lack of tax breaks led to JL's demise. "We understand the postponement of filming is absolutely confined to creative issues and especially to delays in refining the script due to the writers' strike," says a spokesperson for Arts Minister Peter Garrett...

Megan Gale finally confirms that she was indeed cast as Wonder Woman in JL. "I've been a fan of Wonder Woman since I was a teenager," Gale said. "People used to tell me I looked like Lynda Carter. It was always a bit of a fantasy. It was never going to be a reality for me, but it kind of found me and I'm a big believer in fate and destiny. Even if the writers' strike goes on forever, for me, the fact that I've been cast as Wonder Woman is enough." And that's enough for me too Megan! SOURCE: NEWS.COM.AU.

JL to be canned?
Posted by: Jett
Monday, January 14, 2008

10:39 AM CENTRAL: The January 15th deadline for JUSTICE LEAGUE story (per ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY) BOF reported a couple of days ago is being picked up by various websites -- who are also adding their own info on the "situation."

CHUD.COM says:

"I've heard from more than one source that nobody is happy with the script as it stands, and the word in the last week or so is that Warner Bros is just as unhappy with the (still officially unannounced) LAGUNA BEACH-level cast that director George Miller has assembled. And of course there's other internal dissension, most famously from Christopher Nolan (the guy who has made the only legitimately profitable superhero film from a DC property lately), who wishes this film - and its divergent (but still tied in, based on the story details I have gathered) version of Batman might reflect poorly on his planned trilogy of Bat picture. This movie has disaster written all over it...."

"It appears that 'official' news just might be a few days away. Talking to a couple of friends that are working on JUSTICE LEAGUE, they tell me that the crews are all aware of the problems, the cast and script with the latter being the biggest issue are about to put the production on hold.

Crews have been told that if problems don’t get fixed within the next few days, pre-production will come to a halt, a decision is expected by mid-week."

I’ve long maintained that the timing for such a film is way, way off. From the sound of it -- especially when it comes to the cast -- this thing does have disaster written all over it. One must wonder why Warner Bros. would gamble with their solo comic book film franchises -- most notably the Chris Nolan BATMAN film series -- by going through with such a film? If JL is the bomb it looks to be, it would certainly affect a third BATMAN, a second SUPERMAN, and any other potential DC Comics-based films in the future.

I implore my friends at Warner Bros. to put this thing into turnaround and simply wait until the timing is right on down the line to make this movie.

Decision on JL by January 15th

Saturday, January 12, 2008

7:16 AM CENTRAL: According to a report in ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, Warner Bros. has a January 15th deadline to either greenlight JUSTICE LEAGUE or send it into turnaround.

Problems such as a skyrocketing budget, a mediocre cast, negative fan reaction, and the WGA strike may end up shelving the DC Comics-based project.

Thursday, October 25, 2007

8:35 PM TEXAS TIME: MOVIEHOLE.NET is reporting -- via IESB.NET -- that the Rupert Evans-is-the-JL-Superman rumor is total and complete BS.

I laughed my ass off when I read this quote from Clint: "Once again, this is just another sexless pimply geek making up fake rumours and sending them around to websites… only this time near every website fell for it. Here’s twenty bucks, go get yourself a life asshole."

Sounds a lot like some of the haters I "know." ;)

2:33 PM TEXAS TIME: According to Clint over at MOVIEHOLE.NET. Speculation is that Warner Bros. might "horse trade" JUSTICE LEAGUE for MAD MAX 4. Says the website, "He [Moviehole's source] even speculates that 'Mad Max 4 : Fury Road' will be released before 'Justice League' -- but that’s a guess based on how fast the former seems to be moving forward."

So how and will MAD MAX 4 affect JUSTICE LEAGUE? Well, I know for a fact that JL had not been "officially" greenlighted by Warner Bros. as of late last week. If MM4 has been given the OK by the studio, one could assume that it might surface as Warner Bros. tentpole movie for Summer 2009. We soon shall see.

Despite this Miller/MAD MAX news, there's a report that Aussie hottie Teresa Palmer has nabbed the part of Wonder Woman in JL. That's according to THE DAILY TELEGRAPH.

Author: Jett
Monday, October 1, 2007

9:33 AM TEXAS TIME: Well, it's possible JL might not happen afterall. According to a NEW YORK TIMES article, JUSTICE LEAGUE does not have a final script and has not been greenlighted. Here's a bit from the story:

"Only this month Warner Brothers began a last-minute push to prepare its 'Justice League of America,' a multisuperhero extravaganza to be directed by George Miller ('Happy Feet,' 'Mad Max') early next year — if the studio can get a viable script together, never mind a complicated cast. Kieran and Michele Mulroney, who did uncredited work on 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith,' have worked on the project, which still does not have a so-called green light to begin production. A spokeswoman for Warner Brothers declined comment."

Biel says no to JL

Friday, September 28, 2007

2:20 PM TEXAS TIME: After several attempts, BOF finally heard back from one of our "industry insiders" and got his thoughts on JUSTICE LEAGUE. In particular, the casting of Batman. Here's what he had to say:

“I’ve heard that they [Miller, WB] are having a hard time casting Batman,” says our insider. “Actors that are considered a ‘name’ don’t want to step on their [Chris Nolan, Christian Bale] toes. That’s a big problem for [George] Miller and Warners because you have a character [Batman] with its own franchise and it’s successful -- and everyone loves what Bale is doing as Batman. I mean, Bale IS Batman. Do you think someone like a Jake Gyllenhaal wants to try to compete with Bale?”

Our guy continued, “Now, an unknown would take it [the part of Batman in JL] in a second, but then you are dealing with exactly that -- an unknown. See, there’s no ‘juice’ if they go that route. It‘s a tough situation, no doubt.”

Very interesting and I see can see his point when it comes to casting a known actor or star. Why would they want to "compete" with Christian Bale? And on the other hand, perhaps they don't consider it to be "cool," professionally speaking.

I don't know about you all, but I find this facinating...

Now, Tyrese Gibson (TRANSFORMERS) is allegedly up for the role of Green Lantern in JL. SOURCE: UGO.COM

12:50 PM TEXAS TIME: According to ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY via IGN, Jessica Biel has turned down the part of Wonder Woman in JUSTICE LEAGUE.

6:49 PM TEXAS TIME: Got a new, JL, Batman-related "Bat-Poll" up. PLEASE VOTE :) .

12:40 PM TEXAS TIME: You'll be able to read this in a Time-Warner magazine tomorrow, but here's the low-down on JUSTICE LEAGUE:

* Maxwell Lord is the main villain along with the cyborb OMACs.
* All 7 "founding members" of the JL will be featured.
* JL will feature big "epic" battles between Superman and Batman as well as Superman and Wonder Woman
* Snapper Carr will be in the film and Kevin Federline is the front-runner. Just kidding.

Thanks to "Mean Gene" for the info!

9:36 AM TEXAS TIME: Well, the JL movie news/rumor/info is starting to come in pretty steady now as production picks up. As from the start, IESB.NET has got a lot of the skinny. Here’s a bit of the latest…

First up, Clifford Joseph Harris Jr. is said to have read for Green Lantern -- the John Stewart version of the character. Seems WB wants someone “hip and urban” for the part.

Secondly, director David Slade was on board briefly -- even had an office -- and then replaced by the “safer” George Miller.

Thirdly, JL will be live-action, not Mo-Cap -- although the latter was strongly considered.

Finally, the budget for JL is said to be around $160 million.

One last finally, for all you emailing me calling me a "JLA Hater," I'm far from it. I just want this thing to be good -- and it sounds like it will based on the story line rumors. I'm also very worried how it will affect the solo BATMAN film franchise. Hopefully it won't because I'd love to see the franchise continue for a long time.

More JL Plot Details?
Author: Jett
Wednesday, September 26, 2007

6:37 PM TEXAS TIME: Right when I think that I can get behind this JL movie, I hear about stuff like this:

“...our source allowed us to reveal a couple of hints as to who the Justice League believes the villain lurking behind the curtain is: they have a three letter first name and they’ve already been introduced in a DC superhero movie. Sort of. Saying anything further spoils the surprise.”

Three letter first names? OK, I'll give it a shot. "L-E-X" and "R-A-S?" So, they're going to include Ra's Al Ghul in this film -- and I'm assuming here -- in a film that will be only 4 years removed from BATMAN BEGINS' version of Ra's?

Anyway, I’ll let y’all discuss this wherever it is you, well, discuss this sort of stuff. And feel free to email BOF and express your take on this project!

Oh, the source of all of this can be found at UGO.COM. And there's a lot more details there than I have here -- and Patrick's more than legit.

Can't wait to see The Dark Knight and Aquaman bumping elbows!

Biel Is WW? Plot Details?
Author: Jett
Tuesday, September 25, 2007

10:10 AM TEXAS TIME: Back in the day, "Corona's Coming Attractions" was one of my favorite sites. Well, that site's original creator -- Patrick Sauriol -- has got some scoop on the JL film. Here's goes, and be warned, there are MAJOR SPOILERS:

"The characters of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash and Martian Manhunter comprise the League. One name that I did not hear mentioned was that of Aquaman. Where’d the fish guy go? Good question."

"Story elements from the screenplay have been adapted directly from DC’s JLA comic book series."

Since this site is called "BATMAN ON FILM," I'll deal with the Batman aspects of the movie:

"Unbeknownst to the League Batman has a piece of technology that he developed called the “Redeye”, a cool piece of hardware that he can use to spy unbeknownst on the other League members. Want to know what the secret identity of Superman is? Not a problem. Want to find out what can cripple or kill each League member, their Achilles heel? It’s a snap with the Redeye. Batman files away the knowledge in case the day might ever come when he will need to use it to take down a member of the JLA that goes rogue or becomes a villain."

"During the course of the movie the day that Batman feared would come happens: a member of the League will, and we directly quote our source here, 'go bad.'"

From where I sit, this "JL Batman" has got to be an older, veteran crimefighter. If so, then "JL Bats" is a different Batman from the one found in THE DARK KNIGHT and BATMAN BEGINS -- and that's a GOOD thing.

CLICK HERE for the full story that includes more details of JUSTICE LEAGUE.

6:45 AM TEXAS TIME: According to VARIETY, Jessica Biel is in negotiations to play Wonder Woman in JUSTICE LEAGUE:

"Jessica Biel is in talks to lasso up as Wonder Woman in Warner Bros.' all-star superhero film 'Justice League of America.'

Potential deal marks the first piece of casting to emerge from the DC Comics-based ensemble project, which is expected to feature Superman, Batman, the Flash and Aquaman in addition to Wonder Woman.

George Miller boarded the bigscreen adaptation last week as helmer.

Biel is filming the indie drama 'Powder Blue,' which wraps in October, opposite Forest Whitaker. She will then segue to 'A Woman of No Importance,' based on the play by Oscar Wilde. That leaves room on the actress' schedule for 'Justice,' which Warner is fast-tracking as a project before any potential strikes. However, the film's likelihood hinges on the studio's ability to assemble a cast of superheroes in a small window of time. Christian Bale and Brandon Routh -- Warner's reigning Batman and Superman, respectively -- are not expected to join the production.

You know, this is the first bit of news about this project that I've actualy liked. I don't know, almost 2 years ago or so, I made the case in my Scattershots Blog that Ms. Biel would make a hell of a Wonder Woman, so I'm certainly down with this bit of news.

Welling Out Of JL Mix
Author: Jett
Friday, September 21, 2007

3:32 PM TEXAS TIME: I'm doing a bit of digging myself on this JUSTICE LEAGUE thing, and here's what a very good insider friend of mine relayed to me:

"I am '90%' positive that 'JL' will a digitally animated project, using Motion Capture technology [as has been rumored]. Several actors have been tested for roles, like 'Wonder Woman,' and while a physical type for each role is being sought, the emphasis has been on vocal performance, rather than on a perfect physical match.

Also, the team that worked with Miller on 'Happy Feet' -- which was all digital animation -- are being sounded out for involvement with 'JL.'

Could this be why Tom Welling isn't Superman? There's no doubt that the Mo-Cap angle has been seriously discussed, the question is whether or not it's been dismissed.

As I said earlier today, this is going to be interesting.

9:34 AM TEXAS TIME: According to my friends over at IESB.NET, Tom Welling will not portray Superman in JUSTICE LEAGUE. The site does not have an explanation for Welling not being cast, but insists that the SMALLVILLE actor was Warner's top choice for the role.

So who plays Superman, Brandon Routh? The site's editor, Robert Sanchez says, "I heard [Routh] had talked to someone from WB as recently as this week but that could have been about anything." In my opinion, it would be foolish to cast yet another actor as Superman. There's nothing wrong with Routh and he was one of the best things about SUPERMAN RETURNS.

So what about Batman? Well, you can take it to the bank that Christian Bale will not be in this film. Last weekend, rumors of Ryan Gosling being WB's fave for the part surfaced. According to Sanchez, "...[Gosling] he’s at the top of a very short list." Gosling's a good actor, but I'd cast an older thesp and portray The Batman as a "grizzled vet." In doing so, you are clearly saying that the JL Batman is not the BEGINS/TDK Batman. Someone ala George Clooney, if you will (Hold your horses, I'm not saying cast GC, but someone of his ilk -- and age).

The IESB report goes on to say that JL means the Bryan Singer's THE MAN OF STEEL has been pushed back indefinitely. If you remember, BOF heard whispers not long ago that WB was thinking of doing JL in place of TMOS with Routh as Superman -- could this be coming to fruition?

Anyway, all of this should make for some facinating news and stories in the coming months. Particularly, how does this affect the Chris Nolan-helmed BATMAN film series? Bale is on record saying he wished WB would wait and do JL after their BATMAN 3. I've been told many times that despite his coyness, Nolan planned to tell a three film Bat-story. Does Bale walk because of JL? Does Nolan and company? Frankly, they can't be happy about this turn of events.

I guess we'll all find out soon enough.

It's Official: Miller To Helm JL
Author: Jett
Thursday, September 20, 2007

3:39 PM TEXAS TIME: Well, they ARE rushing to make it happen for Summer 2009. From VARIETY:

Warner Bros. is moving aggressively ahead with the bigscreen adaptation of DC Comics’ “Justice League of America,” with George Miller on board to direct.

["JL"], which is the initial phases of casting, is a pre-strike priority for the studio, which needs a superhero tentpole in 2009.

Still, making all the pieces fit has been complicated by overlapping superhero projects in the pipeline, since “Justice League” features a pantheon of superheroes, including Superman and Batman.

Batman and Superman are active properties for the studio, though the next installment in the Superman franchise has taken a backseat to “Justice League” in part because Warners is so keen on the “Justice League” script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney.

“Justice League” will likely feature the characters of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash and Aquaman.

Warners is in the preliminary phases of casting for “Justice League.” Several sources close to the project said that Christian Bale, star of the revived Batman film franchise, and Brandon Routh, star of Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns,” would probably not appear in the movie.

However, helmer Chris Nolan, current steward of the “Batman” franchise for the studio, would prefer that Warners delay “Justice League” until after he finishes “Batman” projects in development; Bale has also let his uneasiness about “Justice League” be known.

To work around these issues, the studio explored making “Justice League” as an animated film or with motion capture, but all indications are that the film will be special-effects driven live action.

The project is so complicated -- and casting dependent -- that even those deeply involved in the project are holding their breath until production begins.

“They’re working very hard to get it to happen,” said one party close to the project. “But there are so many characters it’s complicated.”

It was for this very reason that many believed Warners would move ahead first with a follow-up to Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns.” Singer, however, is busy with Tom Cruise starrer “Valkyrie.”

A line from this article echos my concerns: "However, helmer Chris Nolan, current steward of the 'Batman' franchise for the studio, would prefer that Warners delay 'Justice League' until after he finishes 'Batman' projects in development; Bale has also let his uneasiness about 'Justice League' be known."

I've said this before and I'll say it again: I wish they'd wait until after Nolan's third Bat-Film. If they can't -- obviously -- then the JL Batman MUST be very, VERY different from the BEGINS/TDK depiction of the character.

My fear is that Mr. Nolan and company may walk and we won't get to see a third Nolan Bat-flick.

Gosling the JL Bat?
Author: Jett
Sunday, September 16, 2007

6:57 AM TEXAS TIME: IESB.NET is claiming that 26 year old Ryan Gosling is Warner Bros./DC's top choice to play Batman in JUSTICE LEAGUE. The site's editor, Robert Sanchez, says via its message board that "I don't have confirmation nor do I know at this time that if Gosling has been talked to or even if he is interested in the role."

Ryan Gosling

EDITORIAL MODE: *Sigh* If true, my worst fear about JL could be coming to fruition. The potential casting of Gosling certainly makes it seem as if the JL Batman will NOT be a clear and obvious "different version" of the character. I was hoping for an older, grizzled vet version of The Batman. I only hope that they do not blatantly rip-off the "Nolan Batman" and try to pass off Gosling/whomever off as the BEGINS/TDK Batman. Geez. Thanks to "Shannon T." for sending over the link!

6:10 PM TEXAS TIME: According to the SUPERMAN HOMPAGE, JUSTICE LEAGUE will film in Sydney, Australia's Fox Studios from February to June 2008.

7:11 AM TEXAS TIME: IESB.NET -- who have been on all this JL stuff from the start -- claims Warner Bros. sources have indicated to them that the Singer/Routh SUPERMAN, Nolan/Bale BATMAN, and JUSTICE LEAGUE movie franchises will be separate and opperate independently (While I still have concerns how two different Supermans and Batmans can co-exist, I can probably live with this as long as the solo BATMAN films continue and have nothing to do with JL).

8:24 AM TEXAS TIME: According to OBSESSES WITH FILM, Barrie Osborne will produce JUSTICE LEAGUE along with director Geogre Miller's producing partner Doug Mitchell. The film will allegedly shoot in Australia during the first half of 2008.

With all that said, there has not been a word uttered about JL from Warner Bros. I'd take it with a grain of salt until there is some official confirmation.

8:57 AM TEXAS TIME: This is too preposterous to be true, isn’t it? ISN’T IT?!

According to MOVIEWEB.COM, George Miller wants the Gyllenhaal siblings -- Jake and Maggie -- to have a cameo as “The Wonder Twins” in this JUSTICE LEAGUE film.

This HAS to be complete and total BS, right? RIGHT?!

7:38 AM TEXAS TIME: No wonder the JL sides sounded goofy when I read them! According to my friend Clint over at MOVIEHOLE.NET, the casting sides being used for auditions are from the classic 70s film NETWORK!

Click on the link provided for more -- including some excerpts from the sides.

3:11 PM TEXAS TIME: OBSESSEDFILM.COM says that casting for JUSTICE LEAGUE has begun and it looks as if filming will take place in Canada.

Doing a little digging myself on the audition website SHOWFAX.COM, Susan Shopmaker and Michelle Allen are serving as casting directors. The site also has posted sides for auditions -- which I read -- and they reveal nothing (except cheesy dialogue, but I digress).
