DC COMICS ON FILM

WB & DC's "DC on Film" Future

If you are a BOF regular, you know that I’ve been adamantly against the production of a JUSTICE LEAGUE film right now. Simply put, I think it would be a disaster and have a very negative affect on the BATMAN franchise as well as solo films based on DC Comics characters.

This JL -- or JUSTICE LEAGUE: MORTAL I believe it came to be called -- was frankly a piece of garbage (from all I heard about it). No offense to those actors involved, but the cast was ridiculous (I’m sorry, you don’t cast a 21 year old dude as Batman!) and the story was absolutely terrible -- allegedly.

As I’ve said many times, in the 10 years that I’ve ran BATMAN ON FILM, I’ve honestly never seen such disinterest and apathy over a film that on the surface, should be a fanboy’s dream come true.

So it certainly wasn’t like I was standing out there alone blasting this JL project, OK? And now, it’s looks like they are listening to us.

According to VARIETY, Warner Bros. is preparing to revamp how their DC Comics properties are developed for film and those changes could be announced with the next month.

So you ARE finally going to hire me as a consultant Warner Bros.?! ;) Anyway…

One thing that seems to have been put on the backburner is the aforementioned JUSTICE LEAGUE project. Says WB’s Jeff Robinov, “We're not off the notion of a JUSTICE LEAGUE [film]. There's a massive interest and knowledge in the comicbook industry and it takes time to sort of catch up and understand the characters and the history, where they've intersected with each other and what their worlds are. That's part of the education that we're going through.” And according to DC’s Greg Novek, “We're going to make a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie, whether it's now or 10 years from now. But we're not going to do it and Warners is not going to do it until we know it's right.”

While I personally have no interest in such a film, at least they are pushing back seems to want to do it the right way.

Then what’s up next? A third Chris Nolan-directed BATMAN film? The trade says that there is indeed an offer on the table for Nolan to return to Gotham, but no deal yet. “We have no idea where Chris is going with this,“ says WB’s Barry Horn. “We haven't had any conversations with him about it.”

Excuse me for a moment while I bang my “Please Come Back For One More BATMAN Mr. Nolan Drum”: Bang, Bang, BANG!

At any rate, there are rumors -- STRONG rumors -- that WB is about to announce that a GREEN LANTERN film has been/will be greenlit. If so, that would be welcomed with open arms by me as well as comic book fans. Also, the Green Arrow flick SUPERMAX -- which I strongly advocate WB moving forward with -- could be produced as well.
