Zack Snyder Leaves JL Due to a "Family Tragedy"

Man, this news hit me hard and made me very, very sad.

Per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, director Zack Snyder is stepping away from JUSTICE LEAGUE to deal with a “family tragedy.”

Mr. Snyder’s 20 year old daughter – Autumn Snyder – took her life on March 20th (y’all don’t know how hard that was for me to write), and Zack has decided that his family is more important than finishing a movie.

And it is. Says Zack…

“In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was way through [JUSTICE LEAGUE]. The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all-consuming. And in the last two months, I’ve come to the realization …I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’M having a hard time.”

Joss Whedon – who recently signed on with Warner Bros. to write and direct BATGIRL for the studio – will take over the helm and guide the film the rest of the way through post-production.

Now, on a personal note…

I like Zack Snyder. I am a Zack Snyder fan. Yes, I did criticize him about BATMAN v SUPERMAN, but it was never personal. And regardless of my feelings about BvS as a Batman fan and a dude who runs a Batman website, I very much respected him as a filmmaker and, well, as a regular dude.

Thus, it breaks my heart to hear about his tragedy. He and I are the same age and I also have a daughter who is in her very early 20s. I cannot imagine – CANNOT IMAGINE – what this guy is going through as a dad. My heart breaks for him and his family tremendously. And frankly, I don’t blame him one bit for doing this and walking away from the bullshit pressure that people – yours truly included – have put upon this man over a friggin’ movie...a movie.

I want to say the following out of respect for this man: Despite me giving him a hard time for BvS over the last year, Mr. Snyder still did something very nice for me recently in regards to JUSTICE LEAGUE.

So, Mr. Snyder, THANK YOU for that. Also, thanks for taking the time to talk to me one-on-one for a half hour at SDCC 2010. And thanks for chatting with me and my wife at the MAN OF STEEL after-party. You’re a good dude sir and my heart breaks for you bro. Here’s sending out peace and love to you and your family from me and Team BOF.
