Batman made his first appearance in the pages of DETECTIVE COMICS #27 (May of 1939) in the story titled "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate." When partners of a chemical plant start to die, millionare Bruce Wayne -- as the mysterious "Bat-Man" -- discovers the murders are part of a conspiracy. The story was written by Bill Finger with art by Bob Kane.

Batman has been continuously published in the pages of DC Comics ever since. The character is a cultural icon and has been adapted into a variety of media -- from radio, television, animation, and film. Batman also appears on a variety of merchandise -- toys, video games, clothing, etc. -- sold worldwide.
