COMIC REVIEW: DETECTIVE #825
Doctor Phosphorous seeks to enact revenge on crime boss Rupert Thorne and only one man can stop his reign of terror: The Batman."
Alex Sartorius, AKA Doctor Phosphorous, returns to Gotham in DETECTIVE #825. Series writer Paul Dini takes a break on this one as Royal McGraw fills in nicely.
As the story begins, it seems that Sartorius has been being held captive at Cadmus Research Laboratories for a period of time. Of course, that doesn’t last long as he manages to break free from his “bubble” and is loose in Gotham with vengeance on his mind. And the target of his vendetta: Rupert Thorne and two others responsible for his “transformation.”
Needless to say, the title of this monthly is DETECTIVE, so it doesn’t take long for The Batman to figure out what the hell is going on. Upon his first encounter with the good doctor, The Dark Knight is unable to take Sartorius down. Seems his powers have grow exponentially since they last met. As Bruce tells Alfred, he’s become “living fire.”
With The Batman now knowing where Sartorius is headed -- Blackgate Penitentiary to confront Thorne -- Gordon has the place full of cops to await the arrival of Dr. Phosphorus.
So how do you take down a man who is a human inferno? Well, leave it to the World’s Greatest Detective to figure it out -- with the help of Alfred and his upset stomach.
Overall a pretty good read -- I’m not saying to sprint down to your local comic book shop and buy it, but I’d recommend picking it up if you are there. And I must mention that I absolutely loved the artwork, so props to Marcos Marz’s pencils and Luciana del Negro’s inks.
Next, DETECTIVE #826 and the return of The Joker -- and Paul Dini too! On sale December 6, 2006.
