Author: Bill Ramey Friday, November 17, 2006 FROM DC COMICS: "An offbeat, stand-alone Batman tale by Adam Beechen (ROBIN) and Steve Scott (SHADOWPACT)! Where can a young man take a hot date that isn't clichéd? How about a crime scene on the rooftops of Gotham, to witness a Batman sighting?" It’s been a while -- a long while actually -- since I’ve read LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT. Honestly, I always found it a mixed bag and I personally preferred the in-continuity monthlies. Nonetheless, I decided to start reviewing/recapping that title as part of BATMAN IN COMICS as well, so I waited for the last story arch to finish before jumping on in. Accordingly, the last multi-issue storyline ended in #211, so my first LOTDK review is of issue #212, “Chicks Dig The Bat.” The story is a fairly simple one told in the third person. The hero of the story isn’t really The Batman -- well at least not the main hero -- it’s a high school kid named Fernando. Seems that Nando, as he is called, digs this hot little number at school named Sonia. Nando, who is actually a awfully good and smart kid, just happens to spot The Batman several nights as The Dark Knight was out patrolling Gotham. Naturally, he thinks this is cool as hell! Now this hot little number hasn’t a clue who Nando is, but he knows that she is Bat-fan. So one day at school, after finally working up the nerve, Nando asks her out for date. And what does Nando have planned? Some Batman watching of course! Surprisingly -- to even Nando himself -- Sonia accepts the date. So what do you think happens? The two go up on one of Gotham’s rooftops, the two kids spot The Dark Knight, end of story? Well, it sort of happens like that, but there is also a little “incident,” so to speak. Since I’m a non-spoiler guy, I won’t tell you all the good stuff, so I do recommend picking this particular comic book up on your next trip to the comic book store. A very nice and different sort of Batman story written by Adam Beechen. And a thumbs up on the artwork by Steve Scott (pencils) and Nathan Massengill (inks). There’s not many times that you’d associate the term “feel good story” with a Batman comic book, but “Chicks Dig The Bat” is an exception.
