Wow. That ending was a kick in the gut.

Still with me? Cool, let’s continue.

At the end of issue #5, Batman’s awesome plan to de-power Quar and his Kryptonian followers with Kryptonite rain (which would be a cool name for a rock band – “Kryptonite Reign”) worked like a charm. With the Kryptonians now powerless, Batman, Superman and Batgirl Carrie Kelley proceed to whoop some major ass. Oh yeah, they are also joined by the Sons of Batman, the Gotham City Police Department, and the fine citizens of Gotham.

Speaking of Carrie, this issue shows that she’s not only a badass, but one on the same level as Bruce Wayne himself by taking out one fully-powered Kryptonian with nothing more than her wits and a slingshot.

Of course, the issue ends with yet another cliffhanger – and a rather significant game changing even if what appears to happen does indeed come to pass. All I’ll say is that it appears as if the wounded Quar gets the last laugh on The Batman.

A quick take on the artwork: Artist Andy Kubert and inker Klaus Janson continue to channel Frank Miller’s artwork from the original installment of this trilogy – which is a good thing. Lots of great panels and some cool nods to THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS are on display in this issue.

Loved it.

All in all, I was satisfied with this issue, but that’s probably because I’ve been hooked since issue #1. Truth be told, there’s not a whole lot going on story-wise (i.e. things are moving rather slow) despite the significant event that takes place at the end. At this point in the series (there’re 3 issues left), I can’t recommend anyone pick it up and start now. Just wait for it to be released as single collection/trade/graphic novel.

Regardless, I’ve personally enjoyed this series and I’m continuing to do so…despite the slow storyline and the issue delays (Ugh!).
