REVIEW: BATMAN/THE SHADOW #4 AUTHOR: Bill "Jett" Ramey (Follow @BATMANONFILM)
DATE: July 26, 2017
SYNOPSIS: The Shadow must fight his way through Gotham City’s worst rogues in order to stop the Joker and the Stag from carving out Batman’s heart! But if he’s freed, will Batman be able to save the villains from the wrath of the Shadow?
When we left off in issue #3, Batman had been captured by The Joker and The Stag, and found himself completely surrounded by a good chunk of his infamous rouges gallery.
Things weren’t looking good for The Dark Knight.
As this issue opens, The Shadow saves the day – sorta – by busting onto the scene and setting Batman free. The only problem is that the two are surrounded the aforementioned Batman baddies. Of course, The Shadow simply plans to shoot and kill his way out of this predicament, but is told by Batman, “They all go down, Shadow. But they all get back up.”
Thus, all of issue #4 consists of Batman and The Shadow fighting many of Batman’s most nefarious adversaries, as well as The Joker and The Stag – who, by the way, are planning to kill Batman and cut his heart out of his body
I won’t spoil how this all plays out other than to say I enjoyed to see Batman and The Shadow fight side by side, while fighting with each other on how to take down the enemy. There’s also just a little bit of Gordon, Bullock and the GCPD thrown in towards the end. Oh yeah, there’s an Alfred cameo and a nod to “Knightfall.”
While I enjoyed reading this issue, I found it to be the weakest so far. A lot went on, but the story barely moved forward. There are a lot of story threads in which I’m looking forward to see them come together and how the whole Batman/The Shadow thing is resolved. With only two issues left in this miniseries, we’ll find out sooner rather than later. - Bill "Jett" Ramey
