DATE: June 29, 2017
SYNOPSIS: The Joker has entered the fray, and he’s been offered unspeakable power in return for helping the Stag kill Batman! It’s up to the Shadow to protect Batman from the pair’s combined onslaught and the mystical powers of Shamba-La! Co-published with Dynamite!
BATMAN/THE SHADOW #3 is one fun story to look at and, of course, to read. This has turned into one heck of detective and supernatural story!
At the end of issue #2, we see that The Shadow’s arch-enemy, The Stag, has found his Batman counterpart, The Joker. What we didn’t find out was whether or not The Stag was there to recruit or to kill him.
While I won’t reveal that here in this review for spoiler purposes, I think the outcome is pretty obvious.
There’s not a lot of Batman in this issue to be honest. Most of it revolves around two things: the aforementioned meeting between The Joker and The Stag, and Alfred standing guard and watching a chained-up Shadow who Batman had “defeated” in the previous issue. We learn a lot more about The Shadow’s relationship to Bruce Wayne during his exchanges with Alfred, as we also learn more about Mr. Pennyworth too. Apparently, The Shadow has been involved with Bruce’s training and formation into Batman for a LONG time, and it seems that Alfred once had a supernatural experience akin to the powers of The Shadow back in his MI6. What – if anything – do these two things have to do with each other isn’t clear…yet.
BUT, we learn the ultimate plans of The Shadow and The Stag – and both involve The Batman!
Back to The Joker for just a second, the writing for the character is spot-damn-on. If you’re a fan of The Joker, this story is a must-read.
Again, what a great story, great writing, great art, and a great (cliffhanger) ending we have in BATMAN/THE SHADOW #3 – the next issue can’t get here quick enough! - Bill "Jett" Ramey
