REVIEW: ALL-STAR BATMAN #13 Author: Ryan Lower (Follow @LOWER_RYAN)
Date: August 31, 2017
SYNOPSIS: "THE FIRST ALLY" part four!
As painful secrets from the past are revealed, Batman must face down a nemesis unlike any heís seen beforeóor risk the horrific consequences of the Genesis Engine falling into the wrong hands!
The penultimate issue of Scott Snyder's ALL-STAR BATMAN keeps its focus on what's been important all along: Alfred and Bruce. Sure, the Dark Knight is trying to take down bad guys who are trying to get their hands on a massive weapon. Sure we get flashbacks of Alfredo's life as a secret agent. And sure those images of the past connect with the present. However, it's Alfred's love for Bruce that continues to shine in each issue.
I've said it all along, but it's crazy that Snyder is telling a story that hasn't been told before. Batman has been around since 1939, and Alfred since 1943, yet we have never seen a story really show us their strong relationship like "The First Ally" has. Certainly it's been present in many stories, and us fans recognize it when it's there. Over these last few issues though, Snyder has given the loyal butler a new job: a father figure.
I've dug this run. The entire series has Batman outside of Gotham, and I miss that. Though in Miami, Snyder and artist Sebastian Fiumara make it work. The settings are great. The coloring is gorgeous. The action is top notch. Iíve never been to Miami, but I imagine the day I do Iíll be disappointed by the lack of purple. Oh well, Iíll just keep reading this issue.
The backups continue to be ASBís downfall. I havenít cared too much for any of them and this issue is no different. Rafael Albuquerqueís art is reliable as always, bringing a great vibe and attitude on every panel. Itís just that Bruce is in Russia, undercover, to take down a criminal empire. Thatís about as engaging as it gets. Iím not too into the story and wonít miss it when itís gone
Overall, another solid issue in this title.
Thereís only one issue left (which just got delayed to October) and while Iím sure Bruce and Alfred get out of it alive, Iím more interested in the way Snyder gets them there. - Ryan Lower
