Two issues into
DETECTIVE COMICS’s second story arc and I’m not digging it like I did the first. In fact, I'm not digging much it at all.
Look, this issue/arc isn't BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT bad or anything close. However, DETECTIVE has certainly lost a bit steam.
As I said last month in my review of issue #5, writer/artist Tony Daniel seems to have a lot going on and it’s coming off rather hodgepodge -- even more so with issue #6.
Quite frankly, I’m really not sure what’s going on and where this is all ultimately heading. Yes, it features The Penguin, but that’s coming like Daniel included a major Batman villain just for the sake of, well, including a major Batman villain. I will say that Cobblepott’s new Iceberg Hotel and Casino does come in handy with what I figure is the primary story of this arc -- a jewel heist.
I guess I’m curious to see what Daniel ends up doing with The Penguin here. It looks as he’s up to something nefarious that The Batman will ultimately have to deal with -- though I’m not too keen on the goofy supervillains he’s getting into cahoots with.
An invisible man? Really?
As far as the artwork, I’ve got no problems here. One thing I can say is with all confidence is that DETECTIVE COMICS looks great.
All in all, I’m hanging in there. Perhaps Tony Daniel actually has a plan for what currently looks like a jumbled mess.
