It's finally here…
The return of a BATGIRL monthly.
DC has been previewing and teasing this title for months. The only problem, is will care?
Batgirl has had very little critical success in the past, so writer Bryan Q. Miller had his work cut out for him. DC handed him lemons, and he tries to make chocolate milk. Not an easy task let me tell you. For the most part this issue is…meh -- but it does have some strong points.
One of which is Lee Garbett's artwork. This issue is mostly about a teenage girl, and he doesn't over do it with the sex appeal. Not to say she's a fugly mook. He even makes Leslie Thompkins look attractive, and she's like 70 – though I’m not sure if that's a good or bad thing.
Admittedly I have not been a Batgirl fan in the past. Just when I was starting to dig Cassandra Cain, DC went cancelled her and the previous title. Anyway…
DC has been playing up the mystery of the identity of the new Batgirl for quite a while, and they reveal it in the first 5 pages. Not a lot of build up, and you WILL NOT be surprised at the reveal.
BATGIRL #1 has nice moments with Barbara Gordon, who I am happy to see here. She has been low key for most of this "Batman Reborn" hoopla, so it’s good to see her around. And oh no -- she knows who the new Batgirl is!
Cliffhanger anyone?
My overall impression of this issue is positive…for now. It’s not good, but its not bad either. Like I said before, BAGIRL # 1 is a “meh” issue at best. Hopefully this series picks up a bit and I’m pretty sure that no one will be surprised if it ultimately crashes, and burns.
But it would be nice to see it add new depth to the character of “Batgirl” and actually make people care her. - Justin Gonzalez
