REVIEW: ALL-STAR BATMAN & ROBIN #10
Author: Jett Friday, October 24, 2008 FROM DC COMICS: ""
After reading ALL-STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER #10, I have come to the conclusion that this thing needs to be put out of its misery NOW.
Or better phrased, put the fans out of their misery NOW. You know, I've gone from hating ASB&R to giving it a chance to almost liking it to hating it yet again. Yes, it's fun to look at -- thanks to Jim Lee's fantastic artwork – but it's totally unreadable thanks to Frank Miller's over-writing. You've heard of over-acting, right? Well, this comic book as written by Mr. Miller is the comic book equivalent of that. I swear, I felt like I had ADD trying to get through this nonsense! There is simply WAY too much dialog here to keep my attention and I'm a pretty patient dude. Miller gives us nothing but a hodgepodge of meandering nonsense that is damn near impossible to keep up with. And why? Probably so he can read reviews such as this one -- in which the writer complains about the hodgepodge of meandering nonsense -- and then proceed to laugh his ass off. And that's the biggest problem with this title. It seems to this reviewer and Batman fan that Mr. Miller has no other motive than to make fun of and deliver a parody of the "dark and gritty Batman" -- which he helped re-create by the way. That may be funny to him, but it's certainly not funny to me and most of Batman Nation. You know, I thought at one point that Frank had a “grand plan” for The Batman in ALL-STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN. I believed that there was some sort of epiphany coming for The Dark Knight and it looked as if it had occurred at the end of issue #9. But you know what? He's still giving us the same 'ol vulgar, psychotic, “Goddamn Batman” that we've all come to know and despise during this book's first arc. Here's the plot “Episode Ten” in a nutshell: Jim Gordon bemoaning Gotham, The Batman, and his drunk wife... Barbara “The Goddamn Batgirl” Gordon spitting out profanities and getting arrested... The Black Canary doing something that makes absolutely no sense to the plot of the story. AND... An injured Catwoman – who is an A-Hole too by the way -- sending out an S.O.S. To The Batman via the Gotham P.D. Here's the deal: DC needs to either simply sh**-can this title or bring on another creative team and a new damn direction. Yeah, Jim Lee's art is fantastic, but it's nothing more than T&A and splashpages that's nice to look at. Yeah, Frank Miller is a Batman icon thanks to THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and YEAR ONE, but his Bat-clout is fixin' to run out if this...this GARBAGE...is all he can deliver when it comes to Batman. Come on Mr. Miller, you ARE better than this! DC, either crap or get off the pot when it comes to ALL-STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER. The premise of this title is cool, but what's gone on so far and its current direction is a joke and irrelevant. Make it relevant again. Please!
