As we all know already (well, most of you I assume), Warner Bros./DC Comics is releasing another “DC Universe” DVD that will star Batman. Titled BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHT, it will be set in the Batman “Nolanverse” and sort of bridge the gap between BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT.

B:GK is being directed by Bruce Timm, and written by six acclaimed scribes from both the world of comics and Hollywood. Writers include Brian Azzarello, Josh Olson, David S. Goyer, Greg Rucka, Jordan Goldberg, and Alan Burnett.

It will consist of six short stories, each exploring facets of Batman not normally covered in animation or film.

From WIZARD, per Gregory Noveck, DC Comics’ senior VP of Creative Affairs:

“What you’re going to get from BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHT is an animated Batman you’ve never seen before, both from a storytelling standpoint and a stylistic animation standpoint.”

“The idea is that, just like in the comic books, the DC Universe is full of infinite and varied stories, so we shouldn’t be locked into one animation style. You will definitely get different visual versions of Batman. There will be a range of looks -- for Bruce and Batman and the different characters.”

“We tried not to set up too much for THE DARK KNIGHT [The upcoming, Chris Nolan-directed sequel to BATMAN BEGINS] because it certainly stands on its own, but this is kind of like an added accent to that whole universe. If you’ve seen BATMAN BEGINS and you’ve seen THE DARK KNIGHT, this is something that may have happened in between.”

I'm really looking forward to this as I've long advocated a more adult-oriented animated Batman film or TV series.

There's no firm date of release established as of yet, but it will likely be available before THE DARK KNIGHT hits theaters on July 18, 2008.
