THE DARK KNIGHT RISES: Who Will Be The Female Lead?

Like her colleague sweetheart Harvey Dent, Rachel Dawes is DEAD. (So is Two Face, so get over it already...PLEASE!)

Consequently, we know there’s going to be a new female lead in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, right? So let’s take a look at who that character might be…

TALIA AL GHUL
FIRST BAT-APPEARANCE: DETECTIVE COMICS #411 (May 1971).

Will Chris Nolan (and David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan) use the daughter of BATMAN BEGINS’s
main villain -- Ra’s Al Ghul -- to bring their saga full circle? Will Talia seek revenge on Bruce Wayne for her father’s death? Or maybe she wasn't so into Daddy's line of work, and seeks out Bruce Wayne to -- I don't know -- joining him?

It’s certainly possible and both scenarios -- especially the former one -- would kinda make sense.

One of the reasons that Chris was (um, “allegedly”) so against that (Thank GOODNESS it’s DEAD!) JUSTICE LEAGUE: MORTAL film a few years back was because he didn’t want another Batman on film. Especially one that purportedly was kinda-sorta the same Batman.

Maybe, just maybe, he didn’t want them to use Talia either because he planned on using that character at some point too?

I’m just sayin’.

VICKI VALE
FIRST BAT-APPEARANCE: BATMAN #49 (Oct/Nov 1948).

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I hear you. “She was in BATMAN '89! (played by Kim Basinger)” But so was The Joker, Alfred, Jim Gordon, and Batman!

Thinking in terms of TDK's ending, The Batman’s on the run and I’m sure that not only the Gotham Police Department will be trying to discover The Dark Knight’s true identity. I figure the media -- especially in this day and age -- will be hunting for the scoop of a lifetime.

Perhaps Vicki’s either a hardnosed print/TV journalist, or maybe she’s a TMZ-ish gossip hound. Either way, I see her as being hot and someone who Bruce Wayne would know and could have a -- *ahem* -- “relationship” with.

Probably not -- at least as a main character. However I could see Double V included in a small role ala Mike Engle in TDK.

JULIE MADISON
FIRST BAT-APPEARANCE: DETECTIVE COMICS #31 (September 1939).

Yes, the character was used in BATMAN AND ROBIN (played by Elle Macpherson), but who in the hell is really going to remember that?

Back in the day, Julie Madison was Bruce Wayne’s fiancée. They broke up in DETECTIVE COMICS #49 and Julie was not seen much again in the pages of Batman comics.

Now I don’t think we’ll see Bruce getting engaged or anything, but maybe she’s portrayed as a Gotham socialite that he gets involved with after the death of Rachel?

(By the way, if you want to read a Batman good story that features Julie Madison, I suggest you check out Matt Wagner’s “Dark Moon Rising” Bat-tales in BATMAN AND THE MONSTER MEN and BATMAN AND THE MAD MONK. A CLASSIC in my opinion.)

SILVER ST. CLOUD
FIRST BAT-APPEARANCE: DETECTIVE COMICS #470 (June 1977).

Despite her porn star-sounding name, Silver St. Cloud proved to be a solid character and love interest for The Batman in the classic 1970s Batman story, STRANGE APPARITIONS (DETECTIVE COMICS #469-476, 478, 479).

Now, if you use the Silver from the comics, she’s yet another wealthy Gotham socialite who’s also a Bruce Wayne love interest. And if we go by said comics, Silver knows that Bruce Wayne and The Batman are the one and the same.

Do we really want to go down that road AGAIN?

However, I’m sure that particular aspect of the Bruce/Silver relationship can be ignored if she is brought into Batman on film by Nolan.

Don’t y’all think that Silver, Julie, and Vicki are pretty much the same character and damn near interchangeable?

And I don’t know if Chris would be very keen on a character whose name sounds like a porn star.

SELINA KYLE/CATWOMAN
FIRST BAT-APPEARANCE: BATMAN #1 (Spring 1940).

NOW we’re talking!

I’m of the opinion that no Batman on film trilogy can be complete without Selina. And since this is Chris Nolan's third -- and probably final -- Bat-Flick, you gotta think (hope?) that Chris, David Goyer, and Jonathan Nolan will include her in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.

Sure Catwoman dresses up like a cat, OK? But Nolan made a guy who dresses up like a giant bat seem “realistic.” Certainly her costume could be “Nolanized” and still be a faithful adaptation of the comic book character.

Rachel Dawes was Bruce’s only hope for a normal life. However, she was blown to bits by The Joker in THE DARK KNIGHT. Bruce most likely realizes that he’s now Batman forever, and the possibility for a normal life ended the moment he decided he would be whatever Gotham needed him to be. SO…

If he can’t have a normal life and girlfriend as Bruce Wayne, perhaps he can have an abnormal one -- one that includes a squeeze -- as The Batman?

The great thing about Batman’s rouge’s gallery is that just about every single one of them can be portrayed “realistic” -- and many of them already are in the comics. Catwoman doesn’t have any superpowers and would fit beautifully into Nolan’s Bat-World.

Here’s hoping we get to see his take on this great character

RACHEL DAWES 2
What I mean by that is like the Rachel Dawes character from BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT, Chris and co. simply make up another original character to serve as the main female character in TDKR. They’ve done it before, why wouldn’t they do it again? It’s certainly possible, but I don’t think they will (at least not as a main character. Why? I figure that since this is most likely Nolan’s last Batman film, he’ll finally use a female character from the comics (*cough* Catwoman *cough*).

ANYONE ELSE?
Well, that’s it as for a “Lead Female Characters.” But Bruce Wayne has A LOT of woman in his life, so I’ll throw out some names just for the hell of it…

Pamela Isley, Barbara Gordon, Helena Bertinelli, Kate Kane, Cassandra Caine, Renee Montoya, Harleen Quinzel, Zatanna Zatara, Vesper Fairchild, Shondra Kinsolving, Jezebel Jet, Andrea Beaumont, Aunt Harriet, Lady Shiva, Dr. Leslie Thompkins, Rachel Caspian, Sasha Bordeaux, etc., etc., etc.

Any of those float your Bat-Boat?

Hey, as long as they're smokin' hot, right? ;)

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES hits theaters on JULY 20, 2012!
