Add “Knights of Tomorrow!” to the list of
BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD’s classic episodes.
In near future, Bruce Wayne traded dispensing hammers of justice for a life of domestication. He and his longtime enemy/love interest Selina Kyle, Catwoman, got hitched and have had a son, Damien. Bruce has also passed along the Mantle of the Bat to the original Robin, Dick Grayson.
Batman needs a Robin, and Damien Wayne’s got to be the natural choice for the job, right? Not so fast. Damien’s not so sure he’s got what it takes to join the, ahem, “Family Business.” Fate, however, has no time for uncertainty. A tragedy rocks the Wayne Family and forces Damien into the tights sooner rather than later.
Next to “Chill of the Night!,” this has to be most Batman-centric episode to date. We get to see Bruce Wayne as “Bruce Wayne” (sporting a stand-alone mustache for some odd reason) the most we ever have during the course of this series. Plus Alfred plays a major role in this episode which was quite nice to see.
There were also several nods to the 1960s BATMAN TV show, including the Batpoles, the Shakespeare bust, and that show’s animated opening sequence.
Oh yeah, the greatest Batman villain of them all -- The Joker -- returns yet again to cause mayhem for Batman. Well, in this case, “The Batman Family.”
All in all, I found “Knights of Tomorrow!” to be one of the series’ best episodes. So is this really how the BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD universe ultimately turns out? I’m not going to spoil that one for you, but it is nice to think that Gotham City will always be protected by a Batman.
