Bale's Up For BATMAN 3...Is Nolan?

Despite the repeated coyness of director Chris Nolan when it comes to helming a third BATMAN film, it’s well known that a “trilogy” has at least been discussed ever since BATMAN BEGINS hit theaters in 2005.

Speculation has been rampant for over a year now that BEGINS‘ sequel -- THE DARK KNIGHT -- will end with a lot of unresolved issues for The Batman that will most likely set up another BATMAN film. In fact, the movie’s title was specifically chosen by Chris Nolan because it reflects the theme of the film in that things get really bad for Batman before they get better.

So obviously, if things get bad -- or “Dark -- for Batman in TDK, I assume that things will not get better until the sequel?

Anyway, count Batman himself -- Christian Bale -- in for a third outing in the famous cape and cowl.

"Knowing the DARK KNIGHT story, I would like very much to complete a trilogy," Bale told ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY last week at ShoWest.

“I think that knowing the story of THE DARK KNIGHT, it leaves you anticipating something that really can get very, very interesting for a third. Now, the question would be: Is Chris going to be doing it? Because to me I find it tricky to imagine working on it without it being a collaboration with Chris.”

So what does Mr. Nolan say to that? “I have no clue,” the director informed ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY.

When told that one of his actors (guess who?) kinda let the cat out of the bag that TDK‘s ending leaves things open for another Bat-flick, the director laughed and said, “Oh really? Well, he hasn't seen the film. The ending of the [TDK] is, we're trying for a similar sense of excitement that we had with [BEGINS]. But for me it's always about this movie.”

See what I mean when about Nolan being coy?

THE DARK KNIGHT opens July 18, 2008...

…and its Chris Nolan-helmed sequel will open Summer 2011. *winks* (Thanks to "John L.")
