THE REVIEW
Another new episode of BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD and another quality one at that.

Of course, it’s probably unwise to think we’re going to get anything other than a well done installment by now, don’t you think? Anyway…

This week’s episode -- titled “Bold Beginnings!” -- features Batman teaming up (sorta) with Aquaman, Green Arrow, Plastic Man, and Space Ghost.

Yes, that’s not a typo my friends. Space Ghost -- along with his sidekicks Jan, Jace, and Blip the Monkey -- shows up in the opening segment of “Bold Beginnings!” Yes, it’s totally cheesy and absurd, but it’s such a “blast from the past” the fact that Batman’s on a distant planet taking on bizarre space creatures doesn’t really bother me at all. Clearly, it’s an homage to all those goofy cartoon shows of the 60s and early 70s. Since I grew up watching this stuff, I totally got a kick out of it for nostalgia reasons.

The main part of the episode gives us the three previously mentioned superheroes (sans Space Ghost and company) reminiscing about the time each first teamed-up with The Batman. Oh yeah, they spinning their tales while imprisoned in a deathtrap set up by non-other than the villainous Mr. Freeze.

I won’t give much away so you all can check out each one of the hero’s vignettes on your own, but I will say each is quite entertaining and features a Batman from three different eras of Batman history -- 1939 Bat-Man, 1950s Batman, and a very 1940ish Batman. And keep in mind that no one can spin (and exaggerate) a yarn like Aquaman!

“Bold Beginnings!” proved to be one of my personal faves of the recent run of new BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD episodes.

Oh yeah! Listen closely when Mr. Freeze first makes his appearance for a subtle nod to 1997’s BATMAN AND ROBIN. Hey, it’s been fourteen years since that debacle and Chris Nolan and company have more than redeemed Batman on film. I think the time has come that we can laugh with, not at, that film. OK, we can still laugh at it, but at least it doesn’t make us cry anymore. ;)
