It's a new year, and 2014 is going to be a very BUSY one for Batman on film! Below you'll find a new mailbag to kick off 2014 as we're just a few weeks away from principle photography starting on BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN!
Apparently, several outlets picked up on what I wrote in the mailbag below – especially my take on how Amazons might be explained in BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN – and claimed that I was reporting it as fact and/or that it was a “rumor” I had heard.
They. Are. All. WRONG.
The mailbag is between me the fans of BOF with me answering questions with a mix of industry scuttlebutt, inside info, and MY OPINION! Nothing more and I’ve been doing this sort of mailbag for years. I get that people are starved for BvS information, but a lot of sites are taking what I wrote in the mailbag and clearly twisting my words! Either that, or they didn't read the thing and are simply responding to another outlet's incorrect report! Thanks to the outlets who ran the story and CLEARLY STATED that I CLEARLY STATED it was all speculation and my opinion.
So there…just setting the damn record straight. This isn't a rumor, nor is it inside info. It's nothing more than me guessing how Goyer and Snyder might characterize Wonder Woman and the origin of the Amazons. Carry on...
“Is Lex Luthor in BvS? Who is the other 'Superman villain' you've been hinting at?”
JETT SAYS: Yes. And sorry, I'm not at liberty to reveal the ID of the other villain at this time...but the character is highly rumored to be in the film.
“Is Jason Momoa Martian Manhunter in BvS? Or maybe Aquaman?”
JETT SAYS: Nope and nope. Neither of those characters are in this film.
“How big of a role do you think Wonder Woman will be in BvS?”
JETT SAYS: Personally, I’d say it’ll be about on par with Scarlett Johansson’s first appearance as Black Widow in IRON MAN 2. I believe that it’s a cameo-plus type of role that will (hopefully) serve as a springboard to a solo Wonder Woman movie.
With all that said, I’d bet a year’s pay – in MONOPOLY money, of course – that the “Amazons” of this cinematic DCU will be descendants of those “ancient Kryptonians” who attempted to set up Kryptonian outposts throughout spacedom thousands and thousands of years ago. Furthermore, I say that Wonder Woman will be powered-down, if you will, relative to Superman because these Amazons have evolved and adapted to living on Earth for hundreds of centuries. And since Kryptonians are produced without any “He’n and She’n” – Jor El and Lara excluded – couldn’t this original Kryptonian on Earth have used this reproductive science to create an all-female race? I say yes!
“What was your favorite story from any of the Batman comic books in 2013?”
JETT SAYS: “Death of the Family” in BATMAN by far! I’m loving “YEAR ZERO” – but it isn’t complete yet, so I can’t say it’s my fave of ’13. The story in DETECTIVE featuring The Wrath was pretty cool.
“Is BEWARE THE BATMAN coming back? Or is it gone for good?”
JETT SAYS: I have no idea, honestly. I got some BS press release/statement from Cartoon Network when I inquired about the series being pulled last Fall. Personally, I quite liked it and I hope that both CN and Warner Bros. Animation give it a shot before killing it. But the pug might have already been pulled.
“Jett, what was your favorite ‘BOF Moment’ of 2013?”
JETT SAYS: Wow, there were A LOT! Since running BOF allows me to do some really cool stuff, I’ll include that stuff into my answer as well. Here goes…
The casting of Ben Affleck as Batman, interviewing the cast/crew of MAN OF STEEL in Burbank at the press junket, attending the premiere of MAN OF STEEL in New York back in June, and learning that Batman was returning to the big screen MUCH sooner than expected via the sequel to MAN OF STEEL.
“When are we going to get a look at Ben Affleck in costume as Batman?”
JETT SAYS: Well, it’s now 2014 and principle photography will commence here shortly. I suspect Warner Bros. will release a publicity still of Batfleck right about the time filming begins to lessen the blow of bootleg set spy-pics. In other words…REALLY SOON!
“Bill, do you think BvS is too crowded? Could it collapse under its own weight?”
JETT SAYS: I’ve learned not to assume a film is “crowded” based on the number of characters included. Was THE DARK KNIGHT or THE DARK KNIGHT RISES too crowded? I’ve been told that BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN – or whatever it ends up being titled – is truly a Superman film. The film’s bad guys are Superman villains and Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel/Clark Kent is the main character. Of course, Batfleck will play a major role in the movie; but I suspect that one of the main reasons for Batman’s inclusion is to establish a new “DCU on Film Batman” and set up future solo Bat-flicks. Same goes for Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman – though I think her role is much smaller than BA’s Batman.
“Jett, are we being misled about this film? Is BvS really a Justice League movie?”
JETT SAYS: Based on all my intel…NOPE. It’s a Superman film – a Superman film that just so happens to include Batman and Wonder Woman – but a Superman film nonetheless.
“Do you think that rumor mongering and scoop-mentality of some sites followed by the temper-tantrums from fans has worn thin?”
JETT SAYS: Hahaha! You’re baiting me here, aren’t you?! Regardless, the answer is: Abso-F’n-lutely! Though I’m not a scoop site, I don’t have a big problem with those that are. Latino-Review.com could be considered a “scoop site,” but it’s also run with class and integrity. Now, the “rumor-mongering sites” do indeed rub me the wrong way. There are FAR too many of these sorts of outlets that make stuff up just to see the reaction online. They are doing nothing more than throwing sh*t at the wall to see what sticks. There are a three or four sites – who shall remain nameless – that are very successful carrying out such illicit endeavors.
As far as ridiculous fanboy online freak outs and behavior, I’m sure that you all know EXACTLY how I feel about that subject!
“How do you feel about TV’s ARROW being included into the continuity of BvS and the DC Cinematic Universe?”
JETT SAYS: I don’t think that is happening and the possibility is nothing more than conjecture and/or wishful thinking.
“Do you think BvS is going to be delayed?”
JETT SAYS: Nope. Why would it be delayed? It’ll hit theaters on July 17, 2015 as scheduled.
“What do you think of this new Batman on film using Batbots and Batdrones, as well as wearing a suit of Iron Man-like armor in BvS? Do you think they’re trying to ‘rip off” the IRON MAN films in the eyes of the average movie goer?”
JETT SAYS: Batbots and Batdrones? I’m all for it! We all know that Batman has a long history of really cool toys – included armored suits – in the comics and in animation, so I don’t think they’re “ripping off” anything.
“Do you think that Superman will ever get a proper sequel now that Warner Bros. has hijacked the series simply to set up a Justice League film?”
JETT SAYS: Well, as I said, BvS is first and foremost a Superman film. However, I totally get where you are coming from. To answer your question, yes, I believe that we’ll see a Superman film in the near future that doesn’t include any on DC superheroes.
“Bill, do you think Ben Affleck will take over the solo Batman film franchise after BvS?”
JETT SAYS: Yes (and my fingers and toes are crossed).
“Jett, how many films do you think Ben Affleck will suit up as Batman for Warner Bros.?”
JETT SAYS: Hmm…good question. Well, I don’t think he’ll play Batman forever (pun kinda intended). If I had to guess, I’d say 5: BvS, 3 solo Batman films, and another DC team-up movie.
“What do you think Batfleck’s Batman is being based on (from the comics)?”
JETT SAYS: Characterization-wise, a healthy amount of DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, a bit of KINGDOM COME, and just a dash of BATMAN BEYOND.
“Are any Bat-villains being included in BvS?”
JETT SAYS” From what I’ve been told, the answer to that question is NO.
“Do you think the title (of BvS) could end up being ‘MAN OF STEEL: SOME KIND OF SUBTITLE’?”
JETT SAYS: I think there’s a very strong chance of that happening – mainly to tell people, “Hey this is a Superman film!”
“How do you feel about the upcoming GOTHAM TV series?”
JETT SAYS: I’m down with it. It’s my hope that it’s more of an urban crime drama than a “Batman show.” NYPD BLUE set in Gotham City – you know what I mean?
“Do you think the rubber, all-black Batsuit is done and we’ll finally see a black-on-gray suit like in the comics?”
JETT SAYS: Well, I think the “traditional” Batsuit will look a little different than what we’ve seen before. I do not think any part of it will be a shade of blue (BATMAN AND ROBIN anyone?), nor do I think Batfleck will be sporting anything like “tights” in the film. He’ll also don some sort of Bat-armor with BATMAN BEYOND/KINGDOM COME sort of capabilities.
“Have you heard anything about a young Bruce Wayne TV show that Kevin Smith and Paul Dini are pitching to CW? And if so what do you think? It's Bruce Wayne during he's prep school years and called ‘Shadow of the Bat’.”
JETT SAYS: Nope. I don’t think that’s a legit rumor/story. In fact, that was the same storyline what Tim McCanlies pitched to Warner Bros. as a TV show fifteen years ago. That project never happened, but it did morph into what became SMALLVILLE.
“Do you think it would be a good idea for this Batman to be at a crossroads because of what happened before the events of MAN OF STEEL? Thus, creating a need for prequels and not having to deal with an old Batman following BvS?”
JETT SAYS: If you’re asking me if I think the next Batman solo films might be set before the events of MAN OF STEEL and/or include flashbacks and a non-linear storyline, then my answer is yes, absolutely.
“Do you think that Batman’s suit could be totally CGI in BvS?”
JETT SAYS: Great Scott! I certainly hope not! No, I don’t think Batfleck will sport a CGI Batsuit – though some aspects of the Bat-armor suit could be CGI.
“Will BOF be visiting the set of BvS?”
JETT SAYS: If BOF is privileged yet again to visit the set of another Batman film, BOF will humbly attend.
