Dana Tan is kidnapped by a mysterious rat-boy who has pledged his devotion to her, and it is up to Terry to not only save his relationship with her, but to save her from the clutches of rat-boy.
“Rats” is not my favorite episode from BATMAN BEYOND. Fortunately, the story thread that saves this episode is the strained relationship between Terry and Dana. “Rats” really shows how exhausting being Batman can be, and how fighting crime on a nightly basis effects every friendship and relationship that Terry has.
Dana has finally had enough and is fed up that Terry is always breaking dates with her and blowing her off. Terry tries to explain to her that working for Mr. Wayne is not all fun and games, that he is doing to help his family out. This episode puts Terry’s relationship with his girlfriend out in the forefront, and you finally get to see how being Batman is quite torturous for him. Terry desperately wants to have Dana a central focal point in his life, but the more he tries to fix things the more he messes things up.
Patrick – the hideous rat boy – really doesn’t have the greatest motivation to kidnap Dana, and Terry fighting giant rats wasn’t the greatest action that has been seen in this series either. “Rats” also introduces the evil villain Mad Stan (voiced by Henry Rollins), and we also learn from Dana’s dad that Terry has a criminal record. “Rats” isn’t the greatest best episode, but it certainly isn’t the worst. Just be glad that this is the only episode where Terry fights giant rats. - Justin Shanlian
