Who is Tom Hardy Playing in BATMAN 3?
October 14, 2010
Well, well, well. We finally have our first bit of BATMAN 3
DEADLINE.COM is reporting that British thespTom Hardy has been cast by director Christopher Nolan for some unspecified B3 role. Of course, Hardy was part of Nolan’s INCEPTION cast, so it’s not a big surprise as Chris has a penchant for hiring folks he’s worked with previously.
I guess the biggest question now is exactly who Hardy will be portraying?
Good guy or villain? Classic or obscure Batman rogue? Or could it be a completely original character created by Chris, David Goyer, and Jonathan Nolan?
I promise, I do not know whom Hardy is going to play (and if I did, I wouldn’t tell you anyway). BUT, I can speculate and give you a rundown of the characters that might be in play…
Who says that Oswald Cobblepott has
to be a big-nosed short guy with an affinity for umbrellas? Perhaps he’s a dapper mob boss/club owner who’s known for wearing tuxedos?
I think that if The Penguin is in B3, it’ll be a supporting role ala Carmine Falcone in BATMAN BEGINS. Since Hardy's role is said to be a major one, that might rule out Cobblepott.
Puh-Leez! (And the only reason I bring it up is because it’s already been suggested to me via email. Really.)
DET. HARVEY BULLOCK
Get the animated and comic book version out of your mind, OK? Maybe he’s re imagined as a ambitious Gotham City police detective -- one that has eyes on Jim Gordon’s new job perhaps -- assigned to head a task force to find and arrest The Dark Knight?
WAYLON “KILLER CROC” JONES
Well, I did hear that Tom can cook up one hell
of a crawfish etouffee. Anyway…
I hope everyone knows by know that those “Killer Croc is in BATMAN 3!” were total BS. Look, KC could definitely be “Nolanized” -- see the Brian Azzarello/Lee Bermejo JOKER graphic novel for a great example. Regardless, he wouldn’t be a major character and the possible filming of part of B3 in New Orleans does not mean Croc’s in the film!
ROMAN “BLACK MASK” SIONIS
Tom Hardy as a dark and evil mirror of Bruce Wayne?
I can see it and certainly won’t dismiss it. BUT…
A "Nolanized" version of Black Mask could serve as an antagonist to both Bruce Wayne and Batman. Roman Sionis could be portrayed as a Gotham businessman who opposes Bruce, while his dark alter ego -- “The Black Mask” -- seeks to become Gotham’s top crime lord. And there certainly will be a void in the city’s underworld as The Joker took out just about mob boss in the city in THE DARK KNIGHT.
Now, I don’t think he’d have that black skull face as he does in the comics. I figure if Nolan has the character in B3, “The Black Mask” would be a figurative moniker, not literal.
EDWARD “THE RIDDLER“ NYGMA/NASHTON
I think The Riddler will be in B3
, but I'm not too sure that Hardy will be portraying him.
The Riddler has been rumored for a long time now -- though I understand that most of that is simply assumption based on which “Big” Batman villains are left.
Regardless, don’t think Jim Carrey, Frank Gorshin, or the green leotard-wearing Joker-want-to-be of the comics. Think something else. What that is, I have no idea. But if this is indeed the role that Nolan and co. have in store for Hardy, I’m quite sure it’ll be loyal to the character as well as a fresh and unique take on The Riddler.
PAUL “CRAZY QUILT” Dekker
It BETTER not be. That’s MY role dammit!
AN ORIGINAL VILLAIN (or HERO?)
Why not? I certainly think Chris, David, and Jonathan are creative enough to come up with a major character -- good or bad -- worthy of being in BATMAN 3
How about the new Gotham City District Attorney? One that doesn’t take as kindly to masked vigilantes like his deceased predecessor. In fact, this D.A. pledges to bring down The Batman once and for all.
So there you go, a few throws at the “What is Tom Hardy’s role in B3
?” dartboard. Maybe one of my shots will hit the bullseye, or maybe I missed the board completely.
What I do think when it comes to guessing which characters will end up in the film, we must remember the events of THE DARK KNIGHT -- especially the way it ended. I don’t believe that Batman taking the blame for Dent’s killing spree can be ignored. Consequently, that -- as well as other events that took place in TDK -- must be taken into account when attempting to guess plot points and potential B3 characters.
