It’s almost here my dear BOF‘ers, what we’ve all been looking forward to! And exactly what is it?

In just a little over six short (let’s hope) months, Christopher Nolan’s THE DARK KNIGHT, starring Christian Bale as The Batman and Heath Ledger as The Joker, will hit theaters. I don’t know about you, but I can not wait to see this film. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that we’re in for something very, very special.

Anyway, 2007 was a pretty good year for fans of The Dark Knight, so let’s take a quick look back with the spotlight focusing in on the cinematic version of our beloved fictional character….

2007 started off with a lot of buzz about the next Batman film, THE DARK KNIGHT. Fans wanted to know everything they could about the Chris Nolan-helmed sequel to BATMAN BEGINS; such as:

What characters would be in the film?

Who would be part of the cast?

Would there be a new Bat-suit and if so, what would it look like?

And of course, what would Heath Ledger look like as The Joker?”

Maggie Gyllenhaal cast to replace Katie Holmes (Yes!) as Gotham Assistant D.A. Rachel Dawes...

Aaron Eckhart wins the coveted role of Gotham D.A. Harvey Dent -- who of course eventually becomes the classic Bat-rogue Two Face. A number of actors were rumored to be after the part, such as Ryan Phillipe, Jaime Fox, Josh Lucas, Matt Damon and Liev Schrieber, amongst others. (BOF NEWS ARCHIVES 50)

All hell brakes loose as the crew of THE DARK KNIGHT descends upon the city of Chicago. Production takes place downtown in and around the “Old Post Office,” as the movie’s PROLOGUE was shot. The Joker himself, Heath Ledger, is front and center and fan’s are able to snap several, albeit crappy, pics of Ledger in costume…

Eric Roberts is cast as mobster Salvatore Maroni, while William Fichtner appears in the PROLOGE in a cameo role as the manager of “Gotham National Bank.” (BOF NEWS ARCHIVES 51)

See, 2007 was a pretty good year for Batman, on film that is. As much as some complain about the lack of “marketing” (BOF TRANSLATION: “’Wah, wah, wah!‘ I don’t get to see every damn thing I want to see when I want to see it!”), Batman fans were pretty much fed a steady diet of TDK info. Furthermore, the viral campaign has been flat-out exceptional.

Here’s the deal BOF‘ers, THE DARK KNIGHT is still six-plus months away from hitting theaters, right? I bet y’all there’s a TON of good, cool stuff on the horizon! Therefore, I predict that 2008 will be one of the best years for Bat-Fans to date!

All I’m hoping, wishing, and even praying for is that THE DARK KNIGHT is marketed like FANTASTIC 4 was back in ‘05. If so, all is good.

I’m so kidding.

As long as DC doesn’t kill off Bruce Wayne (Grrr! -- Guys, if y’all do that, I’m done with comics and that’s what A LOT of fans tell me via email!), 2008 is shaping up to be an alright year for those who have an affinity for The Dark Knight.

By the way, we’ll get into that “killing off Bruce Wayne” nonsense in Part 2.
